Aged Care & Seniors

Bringing Connection, Joy and Wellbeing Through Rhythm

Sustaining Rhythms provides engaging drumming and wellbeing experiences for aged care communities throughout Western Australia.

Our sessions create opportunities for residents, clients and participants to connect with one another, express themselves creatively and experience the enjoyment of making music together in a welcoming and supportive environment.

No musical experience is required.

All instruments are supplied, and activities can be adapted to suit a wide range of abilities, mobility levels and participation styles.

Whether participants are active drummers, gentle contributors, listeners or observers, everyone is invited to be part of the experience.

Everyone Can Participate

One of the great strengths of community drumming is its accessibility.

Participants do not need to read music, sing, or have previous musical experience. A simple rhythm can be shared and enjoyed by everyone.

Residents may choose to:

  • Play drums and percussion instruments
  • Participate through movement and rhythm
  • Engage through listening and observation
  • Contribute at their own pace and comfort level
  • Join actively or simply enjoy being part of the group

Sessions are designed to be welcoming, inclusive and enjoyable rather than performance-based.

There are no mistakes, only opportunities to participate.

The HealthRHYTHMS® Approach

Many aged care sessions offered by Sustaining Rhythms are based on the internationally recognised HealthRHYTHMS Group Empowerment Drumming approach, an evidence-based ten-step protocol developed by Remo to promote wellbeing through recreational music-making and shared rhythm experiences. Unlike traditional music lessons or performances, the focus is not on musical ability, technique or getting things right.

The process is carefully structured to guide participants comfortably and confidently into the experience.

Sessions often begin with simple icebreakers and introductions to the instruments before progressing to enjoyable rhythm activities using familiar words, names and everyday speech patterns. Participants quickly discover that rhythm already exists within language and within themselves.

Simple call-and-response activities encourage listening, participation and confidence. As the session develops, group rhythms begin to emerge naturally, creating moments of shared creativity, connection and enjoyment.

One of the strengths of the HealthRHYTHMS-inspired approach is that it helps participants avoid what facilitators sometimes call “student crisis mode” – the belief that they are not musical, that they might make mistakes, or that they could appear silly in front of others.

Instead, participants experience early success, encouragement and inclusion. Confidence develops naturally because everyone is invited to contribute in ways that feel comfortable and achievable.

The session gradually builds towards a shared peak experience of rhythm, connection and group engagement before gently transitioning into quieter reflective activities. These may include relaxation, guided imagery, mindfulness or meditation accompanied by soft drumming and percussion.

Participants are then guided back into everyday conversation through a gentle closing process, often including an opportunity to reflect on the experience or simply enjoy a sense of calm connection with others.

Like a wave rising and falling, the experience gently leads participants into a meaningful shared journey and then comfortably returns them to their daily environment.

Why Rhythm Works

Rhythm is one of the most accessible forms of music-making.

Long before people learn songs or instruments, they experience rhythm through heartbeat, breath, walking, speech and movement.

Because rhythm is such a natural part of human experience, it offers a unique pathway for participation, connection and enjoyment, regardless of age or musical background.

When people create rhythm together, they are not simply making music.

They are listening, communicating, connecting and sharing an experience in the present moment.

Let’s Create a Meaningful Experience

Whether you are planning a one-off event, a regular lifestyle program or a special wellbeing initiative, Sustaining Rhythms can help create engaging rhythm experiences that bring people together through connection, participation and enjoyment.
