Drumming certainly predates recorded history, and probably originated in very early cultures. We have documented evidence of over 8000 years.
Mankind has known the special benefits of drumming and rhythm for most of this time, otherwise it would surely have died out by now. Modern neuroscience is now providing the clinical evidence to back up what drummers have known for a long time:
