DRUMBEAT is an evidence-based social and emotional learning program based on hand-drumming. It is not particularly about the drumming, but uses drums to explore our values, beliefs, emotions and attitudes.
The DRUMBEAT program is a product of Holyoake, a leading provider of alcohol and other drugs counseling and support services, in Perth, Western Australia.
Originally designed to engage at-risk youth, the program has gained success in schools, mental health services, youth and family services, Alcohol and other drug services, and many others.
The DRUMBEAT program comprises of ten weekly one hour sessions. The first six use simple drum rhythms to investigate the rhythms in our lives, our relationships, how we relate (harmony), our identity and community, emotions and feelings, and teamwork. The remaining four weeks are optionally used to prepare a performance, both as reward for participation, and to share with others some of the learnings and acquired skills from the program.
